Blockchain-backed digital art continues to make waves and this week an artist calling himself ‘Beeple’ raised $ 3.5 million during his latest ticket art collection (NFT) auction. The “Everydays” collection auction consisted of 21 original single-edition Beeple pieces, a 100-piece series, and three open-edition variants sold in five minutes.
In the first week of November, news.Bitcoin.com reported on a blockchain-backed piece of election art that sold for $ 66,666, and the animated piece changes after the official decision of the US Electoral College. That artwork was created by Mike Winkelmann, otherwise known as ‘Beeple,’ and his non-fun ticket art (NFT) collections have been hugely popular.
This week, Beeple raised a staggering $ 3.5 million at an NFT auction that sold its collection of art dubbed the “Everydays” collection.
An auction was one of Beeple’s pieces that arose $ 777,777 for the art and the bid was recorded with only a second left to spare according to NFT Nifty Gateway’s online auction house. After that sale and all the art sales, Nifty Gateway’s official Twitter account tweeted about the milestone auctions collecting over $ 3.5 million in ether.
“And that’s all he wrote,” Nifty Gateway tweets. “The auction ends on a ridiculous last-minute bid of $ 777,777. This brings the total underlying market sales from the Beeple collection to over $ 3,500,000 +, ”the Twitter account added.
Previously, Winkelmann or Beeple, worked for well-known companies like Louis Vuitton, Nike, and celebrities like Katy Perry and Justin Bieber before jumping into the NFT space. According to his website, the “Everydays” collection is something he has been working on since 2002.
“All these pictures are made from start to finish every day,” details Beeple’s web portal. “The purpose of this project is to help me get better at different things. By posting the results online, I’m ‘less’ likely to throw a big pile of shit-ass even though I’m still doing it most of the time because I’m sucking ass, ” the artist added.
Some of the most valuable pieces sold on Nifty Gateway this past weekend included topics like Star Wars, Tom Hanks against the coronavirus, and one dubbed “Mario 2020.” Beeple now joins the ranks of NFT artists who have made large quantities of ethereum (ETH) for their art.
For example, the collectors bought the NFT piece called Forever Rose for $ 1 million. Further a piece of NFT art from Robert Alice’s art project entitled “Block 21 (42.36433 ° N, -71.26189 ° E) (of Portraits of Thought)” sold at the leading Christie’s auction house in October.
Many other artists have been flocking from the traditional art space to the art world with blockchain support. Award-winning comic book illustrator Jose Delbo has been selling NFTs and popular 4K digital video artist Terry Flaxton has also joined the movement. Scottish NFT artist Trevor Jones has sold works for $ 55k (“Picasso’s Bull”) and $ 111k (“Genesis“) also.
The nonfungible.com web portal, which measures NFT’s market history and statistics, shows that 5,094,912 NFT sales to date have been worth over $ 146 million. The average price across the aggregate of $ 146 million worth of NFT sales is $ 28.84 per NFT on December 15, 2020. Beeple’s “Everydays” for 2020 collection held on Nifty Gateway can be viewed here.
