Former Real Madrid B and Levante striker David Barral has become the first player ever to be bought using cryptocurrency.
The 37-year-old player has officially signed for the Segunda B DUX Internacional de Madrid this week in a deal entirely funded using bitcoin – the digital or virtual currency that uses peer-to-peer technology to facilitate immediate payments.
So how much did Internacional buy?
The club, part of DUX Gaming – an eSports club owned by footballers Borja Iglesias and Thibaut Courtois, has yet to reveal the full value of the deal, but the move for Barral was made possible ‘by the Spanish club’s sponsor with Criptan.
Cryptan is a local platform for buying and selling cryptocurrencies, report CryptoAdventure.
“David Barral new DUX Internacional de Madrid player, welcome to the infinite club!” the club wrote. “It’s the first sign in history in cryptocurrencies. Thanks to Criptan, our new sponsor, for making it possible.”

Barral, who made over 50 appearances for the Real Madrid reserve team, expressed his delight at his latest move.
“Proud to join a project @interdemadrid with a keen ambition and responsibility to continue to compete and meet important challenges in my sporting career. “he wrote on his official Twitter page.
Back in December, Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Russell Okung became the first high-profile athlete in the United States to get paid in bitcoin.
Okung, who will have just half of his NFL salary paid in the crypto-currency, has urged other professional sports stars to do the same.
“Money is more than currency; it is power,” Okung said in a statement.
“The way money is handled from creation to spread is part of that power. Getting paid in bitcoin is the first step in opting out of the corrupt, distorted economy we are all living in it. “
