During the first week of September, the world’s largest adult web portal Pornhub expanded its payment options by adding bitcoin and support to three other cryptocurrencies. However, after Mastercard and Visa severed ties with Pornhub last week, the company’s premium services payment processor is now failing cryptocurrency alone.
Pornhub is by far the largest adult website in the world, as the site provides pornographic video sharing services to billions of people worldwide. According to similarweb.com page rankings, the adult site is the 10th most traded site on the web and the company claimed it received 42 billion hits last year. Estimates say that 11,082 hours of video are watched every minute on Pornhub, and never since the Covid-19 locksmith traffic scurried.
However, the company has been dealing with financial issues, as master payment processors Mastercard and Visa broke Pornhub last week. This means that individuals looking to purchase the company’s premium services cannot use a credit card for payments.
Since the financial blockade by Mastercard and Visa, Pornhub’s premium services plans now have to be paid for with cryptocurrencies, as that is the only option available. If a consumer wants to buy a plan that starts at $ 9.99 a month or an annual plan with a one-time payment of $ 95.88, the individual has 13 cryptocurrencies to choose from.
Pornhub leverages the Probiller payment processor and the service supports bitcoin (BTC), bitcoin cash (BCH), dash (DASH), ethereum (ETH), ethereum classic (ETC), litecoin (LTC), monero ( XMR), nem (XEM), lead (USDT), tro (TRX), edge (XVG), wave (WAVES), and zcash (ZEC).
“Unfortunately, we are not able to accept credit cards at the moment,” said the Pornhub premium services webpage.
On social media and Reddit forums related to crypto, crypto advocates were thrilled to see cryptocurrencies become the default payment for Pornhub. On the r / btc subreddit, a number of BCH fans discussed the revamped crypto support from the giant mega video sharing site for adults.
“One of the biggest news of the year for adoption,” wrote one Redditor. “I’d say one of the greatest ever,” another person responded to the adoption comment. “Because in this case, credit cards are not even an option.”
The person added:
Pornhub is such a huge website. This is going to bring so many norms into cryptocurrency that they don’t care or want to invest. They just need an irreversible payment method.
In fact, Pornhub users who want to buy premium services don’t just need an irreversible payment method, they just need any payment method, and their only option is crypto assets. While Pornhub leverages the Probiller payment processor, consumers can also choose to use the Pumapay service as well, which is basically another blockchain provider that settles payments in crypto.
People who want to pay for Pornhub premium membership with central services like Paypal, Mastercard, and Visa are shut out altogether, and the financial blockade decision is unlikely to be overturned by the companies.
