Real Madrid is now live on Ethereum. The Spanish football team has teamed up with Sorare, a fantasy game for trading digital collectibles.

Real Madrid is Moving On-Chain

Real Madrid, one of the world’s most famous football clubs, has moved to the blockchain.

The team’s all-star cast has been available as non-fun tickets, commonly referred to as NFTs, in the Sorare fantasy football game.

Team Sorare publishing the news via Twitter on December 17. The update enables NFT enthusiasts to trade the tickets of Real Madrid players like Eden Hazard, Sergio Ramos, and Luka Modrić and use them to compete in a fantasy league.

In this case, tickets have three levels of scarcity: 100, 10, or unique. They all live on the Ethereum blockchain.

Auctions for the digital collectibles opened this week and have already generated huge interest. Many of the auctions are expected to close over the weekend, with the highest bids in the thousands of euros. The highest priced ticket, one of Marco Asensio’s 10 cards, goes for € 5,036.82 at the time of writing.

There is also a bundle set including Luka Jović, Mariano Diaz, Andriy Lunin, Luka Modrić, and Sergio Ramos exclusive, and has already received an application from € 6,798.81 with only a few hours left.

Sorare Brings Football to Ethereum

The Real Madrid team is not the first to list with Sorare. The Bayern Munich squad is also available, with the most popular ticket of Serge Gnabry offering for € 2,064.02. Canadian and Cyprus teams are also listed among other players.

Last month, too, an exclusive signing of Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé have sold for € 55,105.04 to a bidder called maxmersch.

The game has also caught the eye of the football world. This week, Barcelona midfielder Gerard Piqué publishing that it is making a $ 3.6 million seed investment in the company. “I see huge potential in the sports gaming segment in a digital economy where audience attention is the most important currency unit,” he said in a press release.

As DeFi experienced exponential growth on Ethereum in 2020, the NFT boom highlighted that other use cases for the blockchain followed a similar explosive path. Real Madrid on Sorare is just the latest addition to the movement.
